Cross-border healthcare

When you use healthcare services outside your country of residence, this is considered cross-border healthcare.

Required patient documents

The necessary documents include laboratory results, imaging tests, referrals, medical opinions and other similar information required by the clinic or hospital to perform the treatment. Our care coordinator will advise you on what documents you need to arrange your treatment.

Treatment with a doctor’s referral

A doctor working in another EU country cannot write a referral directly to a healthcare unit in another country. However, referrals written in any EU country can be used to seek treatment in another EU country.

Costs of treatment and reimbursement

If you travel to Finland to receive treatment, you are usually personally responsible for the costs of the treatment. You are also responsible for arranging interpreting and translation of documents and for the costs incurred.

After you have paid for the treatment, you can apply for reimbursement from your country’s health insurance institution.
You will receive reimbursement for your treatment under the same principles as in your country of residence. Reimbursement decisions are always made by your country’s health insurance institution on a case-by-case basis. Mehiläinen or Meliva cannot guarantee a positive reimbursement decision and cannot influence the amount of reimbursement.

For more information on reimbursement for treatment, please contact the National Contact Points.

Are patients insured in case of treatment injuries?

For patients, the national patient insurance may not apply when seeking care in Finland. Patient injuries are covered by the legislation of the country where the care is provided. If a treatment injury has taken place or you suspect one, you can register an injury report with the Finnish Patient Insurance Centre.
